Letter From Pastor Dudley
Thank you for your prayers, service and financial support.

Dear Friend,

"I Love L.A." was not only our 2019 theme at Shepherd Church, but also the phrase we imagined God saying over and over again as we sought to bless and serve our city this past year. God loves the people of Los Angeles and every city around the world. Our heavenly Father seeks the lost on every corner, in every house, in every neighborhood, within every building, in the malls and stores, in every restaurant, and on the highways and byways. The Lord spared no expense when He gave His one and only Son, Jesus Christ, in order to reach every person with His infinite love and grace.

With your help, we were able to put Christ’s love into action through service projects and thousands of dollars raised to fight major societal issues in our own backyard - homelessness, hunger, human trafficking, and the foster care crisis. I want to personally thank you for your prayers, service, and financial support as we lived out our mission to Lift Up Jesus so that our city and our world might believe (John 12:32).

As you read through the pages of this year’s Annual Report, I hope our mission and passion as a church are so evident, and that you will be blessed and encouraged by the impact we were able to make.

I’m so excited to experience all the wonderful things that God has in store for each of us as we move into the first year of the 2020 decade together as a church. May God continue to bless you and your loved ones in the New Year!

In Christ's love,

Dudley Rutherford

Lift Up Jesus
Television and Radio Ministry of Shepherd Church, featuring Dudley Rutherford

In 2019, we were so blessed to see God move as Lift Up Jesus (LUJ) expanded all across America. Due to the alarming rise in the suicide rate in the U.S. over the past couple of decades, Pastor Dudley Rutherford’s desire was to see LUJ broadcast in states with the highest rate of suicide in our nation.

This year, we were able to reach potential viewers and listeners who are struggling with suicide and depression in the areas listed below, so that the Word of God is heard and able to provide hope through the saving message of Jesus Christ.

Shepherd Sports
Championing faith and fitness.

At first glance, faith and fitness may seem like a strange match, but for the past 13 years Shepherd Sports has been able to impact the city of L.A. by sharing Christ while offering multiple faith-based youth and adult sports programs. Many participants who play at Shepherd Sports, live in the San Fernando Valley and come from single-parent households where finances are tight and extracurricular sports programs are not in the budget.

To meet this need, Shepherd Sports awards scholarships to boys and girls and families in need. With these scholarships, these programs help them to acquire new skills and learn about Jesus through mentors and coaches — all in a safe and uplifting atmosphere.

Life Groups are the heartbeat of Shepherd Church. For the past 20 years, Shepherd has been connecting people through these groups that are designed tohelppeople become more like Jesus and have an impact on the world around them. Our Life Groups consist of 8-12 people who come together weekly to study a sermon-based curriculum, pray, and go through the ups and downs of life together. Life Groups also servetogether on projects that benefit those in need, both locally and globally.

WOODLAND HILLS OUTREACH

A Night To Remember
Celebrating L.A.'s Special Needs Community

It's not often that children with special needs get to experience the fun, excitement, and wonder of Hawaii — The Paradise of the Pacific, located 2,479 miles away from Los Angeles.

On March 9th, Shepherd was able to bring the flavor of the Pacific right here to Porter Ranch by sponsoring A Night to Remember — a luau- themed gala for students with special needs. One hundred and thirty-five honored guests were able to experience God's love in a fun, welcoming, stress-free, and accepting environment.

Upon arrival, these students were welcomed onto the red carpet by hundreds of friendly paparazzi. Shepherd volunteers and community partners served as individual hosts throughout the evening.

Shepherd provided real flowers, lei's, sarongs, and Hawaiian shirts so that each of our honored guests would feel special throughout the evening. Professional hairstylists, photographers, and makeup artists from Shepherd and beyond donated their services for this special event.

The night was simply magical. Honored guests were treated to a tropical island extravaganza of music, dance, entertainment, and a full-course dinner.

Shepherd was honored to make this a night they will always remember.

The Passion Play

Shepherd Church was proud to present the 2019 season of The Passion Play, celebrating the musical production’s 27th anniversary. This year, attendees experienced an entirely new set, choreography, and new songs that brought a fresh, modernized aspect to the play — a boutique Broadway show — Hamilton meets Les Miserables.

Global Outreach
Touching Lives for Jesus

English and Coffee

Shepherd’s Global Outreach ministry launched "English and Coffee," an "I Love LA" initiative that offered free, one-on-one conversational English lessons to members of our community. Over 100 people registered as “readers” and close to 120 Shepherd Church members were trained as volunteer “tutors.” The curriculum consisted of Biblical materials including the Gospel of Luke.

The readers were a diverse group, coming from all over the world and from all walks of life, including singles, parents, grandparents, international college students, immigrants, and refugees. Though some were Christ followers, others were agnostics, and atheists.

As the gospel was shared over a cup of coffee, readers got to experience the true spirit of inclusion — the love of Christ in action — right here in LA, where many arrived as foreigners and were treated as outsiders.

"English and Coffee" started as a part of the "I Love LA" initiative, but it is now impacting the world. Some of the readers have returned to their home countries, having learned about Jesus, even to countries like China where the gospel cannot be shared openly. Shepherd is excited to continue this ministry in 2020 and is expectant about all the great things God will continue to do.

Fostering Hope
Foster Care / Adoption / Kinship Ministry

There are currently over 30,000 children in foster care in L.A. and not enough foster parents to provide them with a forever home. In 2019, Shepherd Church launched its Foster Care, Adoption, and Kinship Ministry to address this social epidemic and provide resources and supportive services to those walking through their adoptive or foster care journey. Through this ministry, Shepherd is changing the conversation around foster care in L.A. to a more positive one.

A support group is now available to our entire community on the 1st Tuesday of each month from 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. at our Porter Ranch location. Current and prospective foster/adopt/kinship parents and their children will find help, encouragement, and practical tips from experts in the field.

In May, Shepherd at Porter Ranch held a Foster Care Weekend to provide foster kids with new backpacks in preparation for back to school. Unfortunately, these children often carry trash bags to hold their supplies and most prized possessions.

Our Woodland Hills campus also held a Back To School and Prom Pop Up Shop to donate free school outfits, shoes, backpacks, prom dresses, suits, accessories, makeovers, and haircuts to support 100 foster care children living in their community.

This past December, Shepherd held a Light Up the Night Holiday Celebration to bless foster care children from the San Fernando Valley, kids from local shelters and their families. Activities included a free toy giveaway, petting zoo, food, refreshments, and more. This event had over 50 sponsors, including The Office of Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services, United Airlines, and Nordstrom Rack.

Tim Winters
Shepherd’s Executive Pastor Reflects on 2019

Reflecting back on 2019, can you please share something that happened here at Shepherd that really touched your heart?

There is an 11 year old girl in our church whom I will call "M", as I did not get permission to use her name. "M" is not able to walk without assistance. One weekend after services, she stopped us to take a picture with Pastor Dudley, and tell us she wanted to volunteer.

A few days later, she and her mom showed up at the church offices with a pencil sharpener she had purchased across the street, asking if she could sharpen all the pencils in the church auditorium seats, so folks would be able to take better notes.

I wish everyone could meet "M." Her smile and personality would brighten anyone’s day, and I am so moved by her heart of service.

Our 2019 theme this year was "I Love L.A." As executive pastor, what made this initiative so important and impactful for us as a church to show the love of Christ in our beloved City of Angels?

In 2018, Shepherd went above and beyond in an initiative to touch the 30 largest cities around the world. Several times during that year, I was asked the question: "But what are we doing right here in Los Angeles, our own backyard?" So, 2019 was an incredible year of answering that question as we spent all of our energy loving this city we all call home.

So, in 2019, Los Angeles County faced a number of devastating wild fires. Share why Shepherd Church chose to serve those in our community who suffered some type of loss or displacement.

I believe Jesus meant it when He said to His followers in Matthew 5:14, "You are the light of the world ... A city on a hill cannot be hidden." We always want to be a light and a beacon of hope to the community around us. In today’s society, many churches are often known more for what they are against rather than what they are for.

We want this community to know that Shepherd Church is "for them." By serving as an evacuation center during the fires — when we ourselves were in the evacuation zone — we wanted our community to know how much this church cares.

We are moving into a new decade in 2020. Why is this so exciting for you personally and for our church as a whole?

As we like to say around Shepherd, "God is good all the time, and all the time God is good … and the BEST is yet to come." I believe the next decade will be the most incredible decade in the history of Shepherd Church.
